Dr. Kenneth Mishara Selig, 71, passed away peacefully at his home in South Glastonbury, CT on May 25, 2022 filled with the love from the three most important people in his life – wife Kim Marie Selig, daughter Amanda Bacon, and son Brian Selig. He is also survived by his son-in-law Matt Bacon, daughter-in-law Courtney Selig, and four grandchildren, Adam and Jake Selig and Will and Annelise Bacon, as well as his spouse of 34 years, Dr. Colleen Farrell, his stepson Justin Ebb, and his cousin Beth Fishman. He joins in eternal peace his mother, Marilyn Mishara Seligman, step father Leonard Seligman, and father Robert Selig, as well as his grandfather Irving and grandmother Lilian (“Gram”) Mishara, who, as an RN, encouraged Ken to attend medical school, his cousin and best friend growing up, Glenn Fishman, and his uncle Elliot Mishara and aunt Irma Fishman.
Ken earned a medical degree from Boston University in 1977 and completed residency in Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in 1981 (his undergraduate alma mater) before relocating with Colleen and Brian, a toddler at the time, to Glastonbury, CT in 1981 to be closer to extended family in the Boston area and remained for the rest of his life a Glastonbury resident. In the same year Amanda was born, Ken was admitted to Yale Law School, completing his JD in 1987. In 1990, he opened up his own private practice in Forensic Psychiatry in Glastonbury and remained involved and committed to his work until his recent retirement. In the ensuing decades of his career he found great satisfaction in contributing expertise in his field to a wide variety of legal cases, both civil and criminal. He enjoyed the challenge of communicating medical subtleties to legal cases and was gratified to be able to translate between the sometimes conflicting fields. Though he had opportunities to expand his practice regionally, he preferred to work only in CT, staying in Glastonbury while his children grew up, ensuring he could attend the myriad of sporting events in which Brian and Amanda participated.
Ken spent the last 13 years of his life happily married to his beloved wife, Kim Marie, and during this time he developed a love of traveling to various places around the world, special amongst these their cruises to Alaska, Italy, France, Spain and wine tasting trips to Napa and Oregon. To Adam, Jake, Will, and Annelise, Ken was “Poppi”, who, along with Kim Marie (“Mimi”), relished the milestones and achievements of their four grandchildren and always found a reason to spoil them with well-deserved gifts and treats.
Ken was an avid sports fan who at times throughout his life enjoyed swimming, playing tennis, skiing and golfing. He was also a keen fan of televised sports - a lifelong follower of the Boston pro teams - and an avid college basketball fan, cheering for the UNC Tar Heel Men’s and UConn Women’s basketball teams. During the summer (or any unseasonably warm and sunny day), he could often be found catching rays in a lounge chair listening to the Red Sox on the radio.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at an open house on Sunday, June 12th from 2–5p at the Tiffany Juliet House on Naubuc Avenue in Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Glastonbury Gives, P.O. Box 6523, Glastonbury, CT 06033 or online through the Town of Glastonbury website.
