Obituary for John Loynes

John Loynes, 89, passed away August 10, 2023 in West Hartford, where he had recently moved to a retirement community.

John was born on November 23, 1933 in Lowell, MA to Scottish immigrant Mary (Young) Loynes and Samuel Loynes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Constance (Gardner) Loynes and his siblings, James, Sammy, Barbara Hunter, Ruth Barker, and Esther Curseaden. He is survived by his daughter Janet Loynes, his son Doug Loynes (Julie Johnston) and his grandchildren, Erin Keener, Ryan Loynes and Jon Loynes.

John was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Boston University in 1955 with a BS degree in accounting. He joined Arthur Anderson as an auditor after graduation, while earning his CPA license in Massachusetts. His business career was put on hold temporarily while he served in the Army, 1957-59. He was honorably discharged and received a commendation for his work managing the officers’ club in Brooklyn NY where he revamped operations and turned a profit.

He entered the insurance industry as comptroller for Glens Falls (NY) Insurance. John later joined Continental Insurance in 1969, rising through the ranks in finance before being named CFO in 1983, until his retirement in 1992. John was responsible for a number of mergers and acquisitions that grew Continental, and shepherded Continental stock offerings on Wall Street that raised hundreds of millions of capital for the company.

John moved his family to Connecticut in the 1970s - first to Rowayton then to Westport in 1975 where he resided until moving to West Hartford in 2023.

In his retirement, John was prolific in his hobbies, which included clock repair, genealogy, volunteering for the Westport Historical Society, reading, and (completing) the NYTimes crossword. He also - literally - made a name for himself as Papa John, the baker - churning out thousands of homemade cookies for family and friends, including his signature Scottish shortbread.

Private services will be held by the family.
