Obituary for Gregory Kenc

Gregory “George” Kenc of Wethersfield departed this life on February 12, 2022, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family at his side. Gregory was born October 12, 1926, in Boryslav, Poland; the son of Nicolay and Anna (Miahka). He was a loving and devoted husband of Phyllis (Zapor) Kenc for 66 years. Gregory was abducted as a teenager and imprisoned in Buchenwald Concentration Camp where he was held captive for 2 years. As a Holocaust survivor, Gregory immigrated to the United States without any knowledge of his family's fate. He was reunited with his brother Peter and his family after 50 years of his endless searching. Gregory proudly joined the United States Army during the Korean War and served as an interpreter due to his ability to speak multiple languages. In 1956, Gregory established Park Hardware in Hartford, CT where his customers affectionately referred to him as “George” and looked forward to his daily jokes. In retirement, Gregory loved taking his wife, children and especially his grandchildren to Vermont to spend time with him on “the lake,” a place he truly loved because it reminded him of his home in Poland growing up.
Gregory will be cherished in the memories of his loving wife Phyllis, his daughters, Anne Riccio and her husband Mark, Lizbeth Bragg and her husband Clint, and Dianne Weimer and her husband Ted. Gregory leaves his four grandchildren, Marie Cowan and her husband Rob, Gregory Rodonis (who was like a son to him), Karen Riccio, Sydney Weimer, a great granddaughter, Lilly Cowan and two beloved nieces, Ruslana and Tanya. Gregory was predeceased by his daughter Kathy, his parents, his brother Peter, and his sister-in-law Valentina.
There are no calling hours and services are private. Interment with military honors will be held in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery. The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home of Wethersfield, CT has been entrusted with the arrangements. To leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.Farleysullivan.com
