Obituary for Gertrude P McCabe (Porter)
Gertrude (Porter) McCabe, 99, wife of the late James M. McCabe of West Hartford, passed away March 7, 2021 in St. Mary Home. She was born in Hartford, daughter of the late Richard Francis and Elizabeth (Ball) Porter on October 29, 1921. Prior to her retirement, Gertrude was a Bank Teller at Hartford National Bank. She was a member of the Saint Justin Church Ladies Guild and the last surviving member of the Sunshine Girls Card Group. Gertrude was very proud of her Irish heritage and always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in a big way. She loved to cook and bake for her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Gertrude will be lovingly remembered by her children, Mary McCabe of Maynard, MA., Kevin McCabe and his partner Maureen Meehan of Mystic and Richard McCabe of Waterford, her grandchildren, Emily Woods and her husband Dermot, Matthew McCabe and his wife Colleen and Kevin McCabe II and 5 great-grandchildren, Liam, Sarah, James, Abigail and Maggie as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband James, she was also predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Thomas Porter, Richard Porter, Margaret Wilcox, Louisa Porter, Elizabeth Nelson, Florence Rudowicz, and Emily Lombardi.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Gertrude’s life will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021 at 12:30 PM in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. All attendees are requested to go directly to church. Masks must be worn and social distancing will be observed. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Rd. Bloomfield. There will be no calling hours. Gertrude requested that people wear bright colors to her services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Office of Radio and Television, Archdiocese of Hartford, 134 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105.
