Obituary for Dorothy Anne Hornik (Van Doran)

Dorothy Anne Hornik, 87, of Wethersfield passed away peacefully with family on Monday, March 2nd. Dorothy was born on September 7, 1932, the youngest of 10 children, to Wallace and Ellen (Graham) Van Doran. She was a graduate of the Grace H. Dodge Vocational High School in the Bronx in 1951. After graduating she worked at Combustion Engineering on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, where she met her future husband, Milan John Hornik. They were married in 1959 and moved to Wethersfield in 1960, where they raised their children. They spent 50 wonderful years together before his death in 2009. She was also predeceased by her son, John Hornik, in 2012. Dorothy enjoyed needlepoint, crewel, long walks, and cheering on the South Catholic Girls’ Basketball Team. One of her favorite memories was watching Corpus Christi perform at the New England CYO Cheerleading Competition in 1973. In addition to being a Communicant of Corpus Christi Church for almost 60 years, she was a member of the Corpus Christi Women’s Club, South Catholic Mothers’ Club and the National Slovak Society Assembly #110.
Dorothy was a fiercely loyal, deeply caring, fun loving woman with a warm sense of humor. She will be forever missed by her children: Carol Anne Martin and her husband, Ken of Moodus; Edward (Ted) Hornik and his wife, Martha of Farmington; Laurie Philbin and her husband, Paul of Longmeadow, MA; and Nancy Sims and her husband, Larry of Friendswood, TX. She leaves 15 grandchildren to cherish her memory: Daniel, Matthew, Harry, Melissa, Ryan, Shaun, Brendan, Patrick, Ashlyn, Palmer, Trevor, Rachel, Rory, Catherine and Jonathan. She also leaves her brother in law Joseph Hornik and his wife, Barbara; her sister in law, Blanche Dobbs; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and son, Dorothy was predeceased by her 9 siblings: Lydia, Eugene, Charles, Robert, Helen, Adelaide, Edward, Margaret & James.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the family Friday, March 6, 2020 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Dorothy’s life will be Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:30 am in Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield (attendees are asked to go directly to the Church). Interment will follow the Mass in Village Cemetery (Hart Section), 1 Marsh St., Wethersfield.
