Obituary for Dennis P. Sullivan

Dennis P. Sullivan, 99, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on February 12, 2021, surrounded by family. He was born on February 5, 1922 in Somerville, MA to Catherine (Gibbons) and John Sullivan as the youngest of six children. He attended St. John High School in Cambridge, MA and Boston University. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Code Intelligence in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning home he worked for the US Railway Mail System. He married Lorraine Riley and moved to Connecticut. He then began his career with the US Treasury Department Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Tax (ATF). In 1965 he transferred to the US Department of Labor. On March 4, 1981, he received an award for Distinguished Career Service from the Secretary of Labor. He retired in January, 1983, culminating 42 years of Federal Government service. Dennis continued working various jobs until the age of 75. Dennis held a strong conviction in his Catholic faith. It was the bedrock of how he lived his life. He always recognized his blessings of family, friends and of his long, happy and healthy life. He supported the works of many charities and their ministries, whether local or worldwide. Dennis was gifted with a quick wit that gave him the great pleasure of storytelling and humor with family and friends. He was an avid reader of most all subject matter. He loved golf, gardening and furniture refinishing. Other interests included the Gaelic language and graphology. Dennis volunteered at MDA and MS functions and walk-a-thons as well as the Irish American Home and was the recipient of the member of the year of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick’s 50th Anniversary in 2018. He was a Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.
Dennis was predeceased by his wife Lorraine in 1971, leaving him to raise his two sons. He did so with compassion and sacrifice. As a long-time resident of West Hartford, he was a communicant of Saint Brigid Church. Since 2003, Dennis was a parishioner St. Mary Church in Simsbury.
He leaves his two sons, Mark and his wife Cherith of Farmington, CT and their daughter Catherine with whom he shared his home and Michael and his Fiancé Lorna Venezuela-Hityo of West Hartford and his children, Hilda, Deolinda, Matthew and Joseph Moreno. Dennis will also be remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by all five of his siblings, John, Alexander, Kathleen, Patrick and Mortimer. When asked about the secret of his longevity, Dennis would reply “Keep breathing.”
Due to the pandemic, the Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be private. The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Wethersfield, has care of the arrangements. To extend condolences, please visit Farleysullivan.com.
