Obituary for Daniel "Dan" Mielczarek
Daniel “Dan” Gabriel Mielczarek, Sr., 66, passed away peacefully at his home in Surfside Beach, South Carolina on September 18, 2019. As the eldest of nine children, Dan was born on May 18, 1953 to Joseph and Teresa (Suty) Mielczarek of Hartford, Connecticut. As a former resident of Glastonbury, Dan recently retired from Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester as the Automotive Department Head and Professional Educator of Diesel Automotive Technology.
Dan served in the United States Air Force as an Aviation mechanic bringing him to Germany, Greenland, and Panama. As a result of his love for flying, he obtained his private pilot license and once owned a Cessna airplane used for several fun family trips in the New England area. He was a sports enthusiast and loved the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis/L.A. Rams, Hartford Whalers and was an avid golfer. He refereed CT midget football, CT Crush, and coached Cheney Tech’s girls’ basketball and boys’ golf teams. He also enjoyed the beach, reading, music, crossword puzzles, Star Trek and Muscle cars.
Dan held a bachelor’s degree in Transportation/Mobility Management from the University of New Haven and his Master’s Degree in Technical Education from Central Connecticut State University. One of his proudest professional accomplishments included contributing to the book, 'Fundamentals of Medium/Heavy Diesel Engines.’
Dan is survived by his four children, son Robert and his wife Lea and grandson Evan Leon, daughter Kiley Shana Armstrong and husband Scott, daughter Marcy Ann Littera and husband Steven, and son Daniel Gabriel Jr., along with brothers Stanley, Eddie and sisters Lydia Lucci-Devaney and husband Bruce, Jane Tinti-Krezinski and husband Mike, Theresa Kollmer and husband Chris, Krisha Morander and husband Greg, and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by maternal grandparents Josef and Stefania “Babcia” Suty and brothers Teddy and Steve.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 27, 2019 from 9:00am-11:00am, with a service starting at 11am, at Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Avenue Glastonbury, CT. Burial with military honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery 1318 Hebron Ave Glastonbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, a donation is appreciated towards a scholarship fund to be set up at Howell Cheney Tech in Dan’s name.
