Obituary for Barbara Sanzo (Johnson)

Barbara (Johnson) Sanzo of Colchester, beloved wife of the late Louis Sanzo, passed away September 17, 2022 in Saint Mary Home, with her family at her side. She was born in Holyoke, MA, daughter of the late William and Pearl Johnson. During her adolescent and teen years, her family relocated a few times as her father advanced his career which led to Barbara attending three different high schools in Alabama, New Jersey and finally West Hartford, CT where she was part of the first graduating class from Conard High School in 1958. Barbara always worked hard to support her family. She excelled as an Executive Secretary and ultimately spent her last 14 years of work by her father’s side as his Executive Assistant. Once Barbara married the love of her life Louie, and he convinced her to fly, they loved to travel, taking cruises, going to Las Vegas and other sightseeing excursions. Being with Louie and her family was her greatest joy. Many family traditions included time at the Johnson family house on Nubanusit Lake in New Hampshire. And Barbara loved the holidays, especially Christmas where she couldn’t help herself spoil Kim, Karen and her four grandchildren with presents galore. She was a true giver and wanted to make people happy.
Barbara also showed her tremendous strength and courage as she battled multiple sclerosis for over 30 years. After her husband Lou passed in 2009, Barbara needed to succumb to a wheelchair due to her illness, but despite her handicap she refused to give up the fight and went on to live independently in her own apartment where she lived out her life. She would say, “I may not be able to use my legs but everything else works and I am strong!” She had a system and it worked for her.
Barbara will be greatly missed by her daughters, Kimberly Coen of Simsbury, and Karen Mazur of South Windsor. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, James Coen, William Coen, Sydney Mazur and Mallory Mazur. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her brothers, William Johnson, David Johnson, her sister Joyce Johnson and her son-in-law Richard Mazur.
Friends may call on Friday September 23, 2022 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at 6:00 in the funeral home. Burial will be private at a later date. To extend condolences. Please visit Farleysullivan.com.
