Aldo Peter Provera, Sr., age 98, passed into eternal life on February 13, 2021. He spent his final days and moment in the loving care of his youngest son, Aldo, Jr. The family is thankful for the comfort and tenderness the Masonicare Health hospice team provided during his final days. The family would also like to thank the Hartford Hospital Cardiac Wing, 10th floor and Dr. Charles Phillips and Dr. Eugene Constantinou at the Newington Veteran’s Hospital for their dedication to Aldo’s health. Aldo was born on May 1, 1922, in the Bronx, New York. He was raised in Hartford and lived there all of his life. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Helen (Kostecki) Provera on October 7, 1999. Besides his parents, Pietro and Maggiorina (Giovo) Provera, he was also predeceased by a sweet year-old baby sister, Elizabeth, who died when Aldo was only 10 years old. Aldo served in the U.S. Army during WWII at the European Front, was wounded, and shortly before the war ended, was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Germany. With responsibility and perseverance learned early in his life through his parent’s example, he had what he needed to get through the ordeal of the war and the prison camp and come home safely. He was decorated with the purple heart, the bronze star and four major battle stars with the 8th Division, 13th Regiment Anti-Tank. Aldo was honest, hardworking, and direct, and lived by the motto: “think ahead.” After the war, he became a police officer for the Hartford Police Department and, in 1948, joined his parents at the French Bakery Co. on Franklin Avenue in Hartford’s south end. With his brother, George, he later assumed operation of the family business until retirement in 1981. For the next 24 years, when the Connecticut Legislature was in session, Aldo worked in the Bill Room of the State Capitol in Hartford. Drawn to politics, he ran for State Representative in the City of Hartford, was elected to the State Central Committee by the Hartford Republican Town Committee, was appointed by Mayor Ann Uccello to the Hartford Redevelopment Commission, was appointed to the Selective Service Commission under President Nixon and served as a Coordinator for Governor Thomas J. Meskill. An avid sportsman, Aldo enjoyed fishing and hunting and his beloved cabin the woods in Marlborough where he could be found most weekends during hunting season. Aldo enjoyed his memberships at the East Glastonbury Fish & Game Club, the Matson Hill Community Club in South Glastonbury, the Italian American Club, and the V.F.W. Police Post #2829 in Hartford. He is survived by his daughters, Carol Provera and SueAnn Wilkos, son-in-law, Kevin Wilkos, and their children, Morgan and Lauren Wilkos. He is also survived by his sons, Aldo, Jr., John, and James, daughter-in-law, Patricia (Coyne) Provera and their children, Carrie Winslow, Matthew Provera and Kimberly Provera and great-grandchildren Kylie and Aidan Winslow and Kelsey Provera. Besides his brother, Aldo leaves two other sisters, Bettie Mann and Mary Costello. Due to COVID-19, all services will be private.
