Obituary for Albina Catherine "Allie" Wellington

On Thursday, January 28, 2021, Albina (Suizdak) Wellington passed away at the age of 97. Allie was born on December 17, 1923 in Wallingford, CT, daughter of Jacob and Catherine Suizdak of Lodz, Poland. She is survived by her loving daughter, Pamela Wellington and husband, Gary Desjarlais; her grandchildren, Dr. Jason Cavanaugh of Glastonbury and Heather Parker and husband Dr. Michael Parker of Middletown and their children, Charlotte and Stella. Allie was predeceased by her husband, Robert Wellington, and siblings Margaret Kulas, Joseph Suizdak, Stanley Suizdak and Edward Suizdak.

As a young person, Allie moved to Hartford where she ultimately graduated in the Hartford High School class of 1942. She became a bookkeeper at Colt where she met her husband, Robert, and attended secretarial school. During the war, Allie became the first female “grinder” working on cylinder barrels at Pratt & Whitney. After the war, she and Robert took time off to travel up and down the east coast—from Canada to Miami—working odd jobs. The pair ultimately returned to Connecticut to start their family.

Allie’s strong work ethic enabled her to move up the ranks of corporate America at a time when women did not often hold managerial positions. She worked her way from clerk to assistant supervisor to chief supervisor at Travelers Insurance in the 1950s. In 1970, she was voted president of the Travelers Girls Club and she was also a member of the G. Fox & Co. Career Club.

Allie retired in the 1980s and went on to enjoy time traveling, crocheting and painting. She was a long-time member of the Glastonbury Art Guild. In recent years, Allie was an avid reader and bridge player, enjoying many games at the Glastonbury Senior Center. Her final years were spent living comfortably at home under the care of her daughter, Pamela, niece, Wendy Suizdak, and family friend, Carol Meyer. The family would like to thank the staff of Middlesex Hospital for their outstanding care in her final days. There will be a small service for immediate family members only. Allie will be forever and lovingly remembered by her family.
