Obituary for Rosemarie Roldan (Castro)

Rosemarie (Castro) Roldan, 88, of Hartford, beloved wife of 65 years to Santiago Roldan, peacefully entered eternal rest, surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 29, 2019. She was born in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands on December 17, 1930 to the late Veronica (Francis)Castro and Modesto Castro Ramos. She emigrated to Miami, Florida at the age of 15 to seek employment to help support her parents and younger siblings in St. Croix. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she leaves behind her eight children Patrick, Cecilia, Louis, Carmen, Thomas, Rose, Santiago Jr, Marcelino and her loyal canine Trouble, 25 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren, with 2 expected this summer. She was predeceased by her daughter, Theresa (Roldan) Gonzalez and her son, Jose Antonio Roldan. She is survived by 2 brothers, Modesto Castro Jr., Julio Castro and 1 sister, Ana Giraud. She was predeceased by her brother Victor Castro and sisters, Patricia Jenkins, Isabel Ayala and Virginia Murray.
Rosemarie worked for the Sheraton hotel in downtown Hartford, CT as a housekeeper from 1971 until she retired in 1990 where she was recognized for her dedication. She was a devoted member of St. Peter’s Parish on Main Street in Hartford where she was an active member of the Señoras de la Milagrosa and was honored as mother of the year on May 11, 1991. She was also a member of the St. Augustine Parish in Hartford. Rosemarie loved knitting, journaling, traveling, collecting porcelain doll figurines, roosters and fine china. Family was very important to her, she always looked forward to visits from her grand/great grandchildren where she would teach them how to cook or just sit quietly to watch her favorite telenovelas.
As we cherish the memory of our beautiful mother, grandmother and great grandmother, we remember how gentle she was with her words, teaching us the importance of love for family, respect and honor for your parents and peace with one another. She taught lessons of independence, hard work, perseverance and most importantly forgiveness. We miss her terribly but take comfort and solace in knowing the legacy she has left is one that our future generations can be proud of.
