Obituary for George C. Upton

George Christopher Upton, 87, passed away at Hartford Hospital on November 24, after a brief illness. George was born in Stamford to George C. Upton and Agnes (Magda) Upton. He graduated from St. John Parochial School and Stamford High School. He then attended Manhattan College, majoring in Civil Engineering. He enlisted in the US Army for three years, serving in Korea in the Second Infantry Division and then in the US, rising to the rank of Sergeant. After his military service, in 1954 he married the love of his life, the late Melinda Prizio. George was a highway engineer for 30 years with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, retiring as Associate Engineer directing the design, construction and management of highway storm drainage. He was later employed by the consulting firm of Luchs and Beckerman as a Senior Engineer. In retirement, George enjoyed travel with Melinda and being with his grandchildren. He became an instructor and Assistant State Coordinator with the AARP Driver Safety Program, plus a member of the Charter Oak Toastmasters. George enjoyed researching his Upton ancestors, and subsequently became a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. An active member of St. Paul Church in Glastonbury, George served as both a Eucharistic Minister, and in the Mens’ Club. Most recently, George enjoyed playing pool with peers at the Glastonbury Senior Center. George will always be known for his devotion to his wife and family. He was a good, honest and caring gentleman. He leaves his two children, George A. Upton, and Barbara Tyczkowski and her husband, Peter, all of Glastonbury; two grandchildren, John Tyczkowski of Manchester, and Kathryn Grabarek and her husband, Andrew, of Ephrata, PA; and his brother, David Upton, and his wife, Garry-Lou, of Richmond, VA.The family wishes to thank the professionals at Hartford Hospital’s Bliss Wing Cardiology Step-Down Unit for their attentive and compassionate support.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2017 from 4 to 7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home 50 Naubuc Ave. Glastonbury, CT 06033, with a funeral Mass at St. Paul Church, 2577 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT 06033 on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 10am. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to St. Paul Church or Holy Family Retreat House will be appreciated.
