Fred J. Fiederowicz, 70, of Middletown, passed away peacefully Monday, July 6, 2009 at St Francis Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth C. Griffo. Born in Hartford on August 12, 1938, he was the son of the late Fred Fiederowicz and Margaret (Evanowski) Guerrera; he resided in the Hartford area most of his life and for the last 20 years in Middletown. Fred was a U.S. Navy Veteran and the owner/operator of Fred’s Auto Mart on the Berlin Turnpike, Berlin where his motto was “Better Cars for Less Since 1976”. Along with his wife Elizabeth, Fred will be warmly and lovingly remembered by his two stepsons, John B. Griffo of Higganum, Joseph W. Griffo of Charlotte, NC and his stepdaughter Michele A. Hopkins and her husband M. John Hopkins IV, Fred’s dear and special stepson-in-law, of St Louis, MO, his step grandson Joshua Griffo of Middletown, a half sister Mary McGinnis of Sanger, CA and a daughter Julie Fiederowicz from Florida. Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by his sister Irene Fiederowicz. He had been retired for the last few years. His days were filled with keeping in touch and visiting old friends including those from the Charter Oak Terrace Neighborhood, going to the casino to play poker and long daily walks with his beloved Australian Cattle Dog Sydney Marie who misses him very much. Fred was a past member of the Connecticut Street Rod Association. For many years, he was a crew member of numerous race cars including the #44 Racing Team at Riverside Park Speedway and the Modified #50 Car driven by Richie Gallup. Fred also built a race car, as he was a master at body work and painting cars. Fred was an avid UConn Huskies Men’s basketball fan and a Red Sox fan. He enjoyed trips to Fenway Park sitting in the Green Monster seats with his wife, stepdaughter and her husband. He and his wife traveled frequently to St Louis to visit his stepdaughter and her husband and took in Cardinals ballgames, Rams football games and Blues Hockey games. So many people will miss seeing Fred, including his poker buddies at the casino, his neighbors whom he frequently saw on his walks with Sydney Marie, as well as the staff at St Francis Hospital who had grown so close to Fred and his family. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their devoted and loving care to him during his stay. Fred fought a valiant battle and his death is a heart breaking loss for his family and friends. He will be missed so very much. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 10:00 am directly in St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, 494 New Britain Avenue, Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Sacred Heart Section, 1 Cottage Grove Road, Bloomfield. There will be no calling hours.
